it depends on your functional levels if it is still at 2003 yes if it is at 2008 no. most likley if you created the ad domain on 2008 r2 it is at 2008 functional level and you cant use 2003 server, May I ask why you want to do this?

Wwe need to add the 2008 server and make it the PDC (move all roles)
One of our 2003 controllers is having some AD issues and shouod be demoted, then promoted back. I was trying to decide if this should be done before, or after adding the 2008 server and installing the 2008 ADPREP to the existing 2003 controllers

Will get the AD issue resolved before adding the 2008 server

IF you run dcpromo on a 2003 server and you are at 2008 native you will get a run adprep error.

ok, if your running 2003 server now then just make sure your domain functional level is at 2003 native and then do the following from the 2003 server.

    adprep /forestprep
    adprep /domainprep
    adprep /domainprep /gpprep
    adprep /rodcprep

Then move all roles to the 2008 server but leave the funtional level at 2003
then rebuild the 2003 server and then run DC promo on it and your done,
