MAC OS X Reinstall Help

I havent used my mac in a long time.  Before i give it to my children i want to delete everything and reinstall the operating system.  When i start the install it asks me for my password which i dont remember cause it was saved.  How can i just reinstal the OS?

Boot from the install CD by holding down the c key. Instead of doing an install, pull down the Uitilites menu to Disk Utility and erase the drive. Then install the OS.

However, this will also erase all the apps. Is this what you really want to do?

It would be easier to create a new administrative user for the kids, then erase your user profile.
