Hi,

I was doing a physical to virtual conversion of a workstation running windows 7.. It got to 98% and errors out - reconfig error. Read on another site about using the configure wizard to fix.  Any idea on what steps needed to fix??

This is going to be loaded into a vmserver 2.0.2.

Many thanks!

Hi

It depends on what reconfigurations did you did on the new VM.

What did you change/customize on the conversion?

was there plenty of free space on the system being converted?  It's probably at the point where it's trying to inject the VMware drivers into the system so it will boot without issue.

Complete the conversion again, but Accept the Defaults,. with no modifications. No installaing of VMware Tools, changing drive sizes etc

Hi All,

Hanccocka, I was trying to avoid re-running if possible, It was a large conversion.  I think one of the default settings may be my problem.. I think it has something to do with the hard drive controller missing a driver. I tried loading it in vmserver and it couldn't find hard drive.

Many thanks!

Like I said, the issue is probably during driver injection...

What do the logs reveal?  What happens when you try to boot the vm?  What version of vmware converter are you using?

Are you increasing or decreasing the disk size?

Hi Danm66-

Hope this helps clarify things:

When I try to boot I error out with blue screen
I'm using standalone converter 5.
I'm decreasing the disk size.

Thanks

Please also note VMware Server 2.0.2 has been discontinued, and extended support finally came to an end on 30 June 2011. VMware will not be developing that product any further.

Hi

But if the P2V did not finish, of course the VM will have issues and the blue screen is an example.

95% is a post-cloning. So is already clone the physical machine and just finishing in the VMware side.

But since the destination is a VMware Workstation/Server the destination product do not have any impact on it.

So please just give more information about what you are converting. Physical server information, disks sizes, what destination are you choosing. How much space is to convert, and also how much space do you have on the destination.

Provide all information, and also upload the logs from the conversion. After this we can give a more exact answer. If not... we just guessing.

I'm converting a windows 7 workstation with a decreased drive 75gb (originally 500gb). Storing on a server (windows 2008) drive with 200gb free  I'll provide logs in a bit.

Hi

You should only work with that VM when the P2V is finish 100%. Do not perform any Windows recover in that VM.

I will see the logs and give an opinion.

Hi

This is just the server log, we need all the logs from that conversion.

When you finish a conversion just export all the the logs.

I had similar errors. Just download the latest vmware converter 5 and try - it will work.

Yes we need.

The server log is just the tasks. Client log will log all conversion steps.

Hi

How many disks/partitions are you converting?

Are you changing anything on the first SO disk?

Hi

You have lot of services running while you are converting this physical machine. You should stop all non Windows services.

For example you have lot of Symantec services running.

Hi

How did you change from 2 to 1?

Because one is the OS partition(100Mb). You should not change anything on this partition.

Hi

Yes, but from the original Windows you must see a partition with 100Mb. This is a partition that Windows 7/2008 use to boot.

So if you do not see this hidden partition you should check your Windows 7 and see if you see this partition.

Hi

So you need to convert this too.

Are you converting?

Do you have space on the destination to hold the 400Gb? If yes we should convert without change the size of the disk, we can change this after the P2V.

Let me find another destination to hold the 400gb. I was looking at the vm dashboard and its showing the drives as ide; they shouldn't be. That may be the problem.

which makes me wonder if it's not trying to boot to the wrong partition (are you unselecting the utility partition during p2v?) but searching kb.vmware.com comes up with these two KB's:

VMware Converter operation fails with the log entry: Error 2 getting default from Vista BCD file (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1014212)
P2V conversion using VMware Converter fails with the error: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1037507)

Just try to take C: bootble partition only as it is. You may go to advanced and just unclick the remaining partition. Without resizing or changing anything else. That way you can check with conversion of your bootable partition.

Hi

@danm66 I was trying to find those BCD KB glade that you added :)  and I think the http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1014212 maybe fix the problem.

@J_Drake check and see if this can fix the boot issue.

But do not forget that you need to convert also that OS partition.

If this still not work, also if you have free space to hold that 400Gb, please try convert without resize the disk, we can reduce after.

Hope this can help.

I fixed it.. I manually modded vmx file to change ide to scsi. Then manually changed reg entry.

It works.. I need to test all drivers now.

I'll report back.

Thanks!

ah crud!  I thought about suggesting that early on, because that's been a big problem cause with ESX but I thought Server would be less susceptible to that problem  That's what I get for thinking.  Sorry!

Hi all,

Yep.. everything is working as it should. Now I need to solve an unrelated IIS issue.  I need to setup a internal dns entry for an internal site. (jeff.cr.local to resolve to abc.com)

Thanks!
