CRM for outlook not connecting

A recent problem has come about with regards to the CRM for outlook plugin. it works fine for all users who are located on the same network as the CRM server (internal users), however there seems to be a random connection drop out issue for those who are outside the network and using an outside connection to remotely connect to the CRM server via CRM outlook plugin.
There are days where CRM will connect and work fine via out and then days where it just wont connect at all, however when the outlook plugin will not connect users are still able to connect to the crm web portal and login in with no problem at all.
The problem seems odd, and one which has me clueless as to start looking.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
