have an issue on a site where the connection to the internet on 1 workstation drops. They are able to access the server shares. Unable to ping the router (sonicwall) or access the web. If we do an IP release and renew we are able to ping the router and access to the web is restored.

Any ideas?

check if the NIC is set to sleep state when in idle state. this is part of power saving mechanism when PC is idle.
open the Network adaptor and go to power management tab.
There you would see an option like " allow the computer to turn off the device to save power"
If its checked, please uncheck this option.

Any other Ideas as disabling the sleep state on the NIC didnt solve the issue. It seems as though it could be an issue with hardware other than the pc as it's started happening to other users in the company.

On a workstation, when you do an IP release and renew, are you getting the same IP or a different one?
If you are getting a different one, that means the firewall/router  is some how blocking the connections after certain period. Check your firewall logs.
