Exchange 2010 native mailbox high-availability option

I'm very new to Exchange 2010 and was wondering what the native mailbox high-availability option is?  I've looked at the definition on MS website, but I don't understand why this would be an option.  Shouldn't all mailboxes be highly available?  What is the downside to this?
