Error running chkdsk. Now what?

We got the output below after running chkdks. It's an iSCSI volume that got dropped when there was a network loop. The volume has been throwing errors ever since. We ran chkdsk in read-only mode and it failed after 8%. #1-we're trying to find out if it's a certain directory that's corrupt. #2-how do we know how long a full out chckdsk will take. it's windows server 2008 R2. there are approximately 20 million files. it's revenue producing, customer facing, so downtime has to be last resort and I have to give them a time frame. It's working right now unless a customer needs data from certain locations and then it fails. But there's no log of which directories that is for.

Hi!

On server 2008 R2 the time it takes to run a chkdsk is mainly RAM dependant so the more ram the quicker it should be.
what size of storage is the drive.
Is it within a RAID?

The storage is an Equallogic iSCSI SAN. 14 disks, Sata 7200 RPM. There is 64 GB ram in the server, 32 dedicated to SQL. On average there's 20GB free.

Are you suggesting we can run the real fix online or no?

I wouldnt advide running a fix on live yet.

Do you have a DR for this server?

it sounds like you are getting errors you have a issue with the volume it could be because one of the drives within the array is not healthy and on its way out.

Withing the san manager does it show you anything about drive fittness

The volume is 5.5 terabytes with millions of files that change daily. So our "DR" is a SAN replicated copy. HOwever the SAN doesn't know what's in the volume so if it's corrupt from Windows perspective, so is the replicated copy. So essentially we only have the live volume. My colleague thinks there's different levels of "online checks" that we can do that will take different amounts of time. The SAN shows no issues from it's perspective (block level though).

Hi sorry for the delay.

I would use chkdsk /f that will look for faults with the disk but it doesnt check for the disk for bad sectors..

this option should be the quickest so it should minimise down time.

Thanks. Couple of questions:

1. What is the /P option mentioned at recovery console. I don't see it described what that does anywhere.

2. If I run from command prompt or GUI is there an accurate progress indicator?

3. Is there a log output from both options? Can I check it realtime to see what phase it's in?

4. How do I know if it's going to scan on reboot? I only want to run it against a 6 TB iSCSI-SAN volume, not the boot volume. I'd prefer to do it while it's online so I can remote desktop in and see it (i'm an hour away from the datacenter and doing it on the weekend).

thanks. sounds good. I did think of one thing. I can look in Resource Manager and see any files that are actively being written to in the Disk tab. I'll have that open and see where's it's writing too. I really hope it's not storing all the gory details in memory until the end. that would suck. I looked at this document (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=14243) and am trying to give the CEO an estimate of how long it will take with the /F option. There are over 20 million files with 96 GB of ram on 6 TB. Running Server 2008 R2. Any idea how long /F and /R would take respectively? And should I run the "don't scan on reboot" switch first?

Yes you could see if you can see anything in the resouce monitor.
i have had a read of that doc and if you use the times that MS have posted about r2 with 100million files it takes 1:50. I would guess that it will take 1 hour with the amount of RAM that you have avaliable but that is a guess not set in stone..

it just finished. started at 8:30am. so took about 15 hours. I saved the output to a log file. how do I verify how many files we have (it checked)?

Here's what was weird. it go to 73% done in about 5 hours and then took another 9 hours to get 5% done. then it shot up and finished the rest in an hour (rest of phase 2 plus all of phase 3).

CEO was freaking out because he felt we'd have to risk it cancel the process so our customers could go back online. around 77% I tested the rate and it was doing 42 indexes per minute which would result in it running for another 68 hours. that would be unacceptable to the customers.

Anyway an hour and a half later I checked and not only had it finished phase 2 it was 30% done with phase 3. an hour later and it was entirely done.

so crisis averted, but we learned there's no way to know how long it will take. It really depends on how many problems there are (which is indeterminable). This volume was only 1 TB bigger than a clean volume on a windows server 2003 machine. that one took 5 hours. this took 15 total. could have been far worse.

Oh ok then thats kinda weird but I guess that where all the issues were thats why it was slow and there was minimal issues towards the end of the drives.

I am glad that its working so has the system come back online and you have no issues?

quick follow up question: is there any reason not to mount the volume on another server? One that can be down indefinitely while chkdsk is run? this way we can use the main server hardware in case we decided to run off our backup copy?
