Hello,

We have a Windows XP pro machine that we are trying to install a new printer on.

The USB printer is local and will not install via the drivers despite testing the drivers/printer on other machines without issue.

I feel it is an issue with the operating system specific to this one computer perhapse the USB driver subsystem  are not working correctly.

The USB printer is recognized by the device manager but when we try and update the drivers the system says it cannot be installed.

I know that the USB drivers should be installed prior to plugging in the printer into the computer.

This did not work.

Thank you for your help.

Hi

Have you tried to fetch the newest driver from the manufacturs website?

Yes and I have confirmed that the driver works with another system with identical hardware.  There is something wrong with the particular computer.

Then "what is different" to this computer from the test ones?...
1.Is it integrated to "active directory"?... and in this case maybe there is a policy that will dissalow installing "unsigned drivers".
2. The account from you are trying to install is "local admin"?...
3. Look into the device manager for a "yellow baloon" (with printer connected) - if there is one - delete it (or delete all if there are more) then disconnect the printer and connect again - usually if there was an "earlier" install that wasn't completed (because at driver signing warning the user did not select "continue anyway") it will not ever install again.

1. Yes this computer is on a domain.  Checked the policies and they are exactly the same
2. Yes the account is local admin
3. Tried uninstalling/deleting the printer and reinstalling. Disconnected and reconnected printer and rebooted several times.  Tried to reinstall without luck.

Do you use the "setup.exe" from the drivers package or by "add printer" option, because some printers (at least I had some trouble with some HP 2055) that didn't want to install with "add printer" but just running the setup.exe from the CD.

I tried both.  The printer is a Zebra ZXP 3 card printer.

What if you let the computer find the printer, then enter the device manger and find the device. Take the properties on the device and choose to update driver. Skip finding the driver automatilly and point to the driver you have downloaded manually.

I have found this usefully as it seems XP not always can find the right driver in the driver package...

Did the above steps and windows says "Cannot install this hardware"  "The hardware was not installed because the wizard could not find the necessary software"

I have tried extracting the drivers to several different locations on the hard drive and was albe to make this work with the other computer just not this one.

is there any yellow flags with any of your USB controllers?

Is the OS 32 bit or 64 bit?

Other printers are working ok that were previously installed.  Tried different USB ports.

Feel there is a conflict between something that is installed on the computer and the USB drivers.

Perhaps part of the usb control system is corrupt

You can try removing the USB controller by removing them in the device manager. If you then scan for changes in the device manager they should be reinstalled...

Do any other usb devices work on the computer that is having problems installing the printer, maybe the usb ports are damaged. If other devices are working then you will probably have to try another cable or there is some error in the os, maybe try a system restore and see if that helps. If other usb devices don't work you'll probably need a new motherboard or you can maybe get away with a pci usb extension card.
