I have a client who has 2 Dell computers he wants to connect to a KVm switch.

One PC has a graphics card with a DMS59 connection on the card onl and the other PC has a graphics card with a DVI Connection only on the card.
The monitor has only a VGA connection on it.

Can anyone confirm for me that we can get a DVI KVM Switch then use a DMS59 to DVI adapter cable on the relevant computer in order to use both computers with the one keyboard monitor and mouse.  I am presuming I can also get a VGA to DVI adapter to be able to connect the monitor into the KVM Swiitch.

Either one will work.  The VGA signal will pass through the adapter and the KVM switch will show the display.

The DVI-59 isn't an issue => you simply use the DVI output.

A DVI -> VGA adapter will only work, however, if both of the DVI outputs are DVI-A ... a DVI-D output does not contain the analog signal needed to drive a VGA display device.    MOST video cards provide DVI-A outputs, but not all ... so be sure to check.

... note also that since you've using a DVI -> VGA adapter, you could use two of them and a much-less-expensive VGA KVM switch  [although if you do this, be sure the client understands that if he later upgrades to a DVI-only monitor he'll have to replace the KVM].

Since you are using a VGA moniter, it would be way cheaper to just buy two DVI to VGA adapters and an inexpensive VGA KVM.

Microcenter.com has the Inland Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for $9.99 each, and the Trendnet 2-Port USB KVM Switch Kit for $12.99.  That's a complete solution for under forty bucks!

I do have a VGA 2 port USB KVM Switch already.

PC1 has the DMS59 plug with a DMS - VGA adapter connected already.  I was able to get video but no mouse or keyboard with this set-up on PC1.  I presumed it was becuase of the adapter??

PC2 has DVI connector on the video card.  i did not have a DVI - VGA adapter with me but will take one and see how that goes.

Should the KV switch work OK with these two adapters in the loop?

I have bought an Aten 2 Port USB KVME Switch  See weblink below for description:

The most important thing to ensure reliability is to use a powered KVM switch -- the one you purchased is fine.

r.e. no mouse or keyboard => are your mouse & keyboard wired?    Many wireless devices do not work through a KVM  (some do, some don't -- and I've not found any good way to know what combinations work other than trying them)

The first time I set up my USB KVM switch the computer had to load drivers and be restarted and then everything worked great.

Surprisingly I ended up installing a non-self powered KVM switch to the two computers and they both booted up fine with full keyboard and mouse functionality as well as switching functionality.

i am going to test the self-powered KVM switch at home, as it maybe faulty??
