Sharepoint implementation from scratch

I am needing to rollout a Sharepoint environment for a small bank with around 200 users.  I am trying to get a feel for what I might need hardware/software wise to implement.. I have heard that Sharepoint is a resource hog and if you want to index all of your documents you need a SQL database server running as well(on a separate server) not to mention an index server..  Any overall advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!
Also how much time and effort it takes to administer Sharepoint once it is up and running would be appreciated. I have worked with Exchange and AD for over 10 years so if you can offer a comparison in regards to adminstrative intensive it would be...

This is not a fast growing company and I dont expect the number of users to change by more than 2 or 3% a year...

Already have an Exchange 2003 environment with AD 2003 running as well..

I'm assuming you have seen these already:

Hardware and software requirements (SharePoint Foundation 2010)

Hardware and software requirements (SharePoint Server 2010)

You have options as far as creating your farm. Your usage might be small enough you have one SharePoint server, and then you need to make sure you have SQL Server on the back-end. Don't do a single-server install (SQL Express) as that will not let you scale out in the future.
