We don't want or need all of the bells and whistles that would come with System Center. We just want to be able to manage the virtual machines from the local machine. We just need the virtual machines to run, not much else. Do we need to purchase System Center for this type of environment? We normally just the free ESXi hypervisor in these situations.

Second question:
With Server 2008 R2 Enterprise you can run 4 virtual machines with Hyper-V with the same license. Does this hold true when running the same 4 virtual machines in a vmware environment?

1. No you do not need SCVMM. The hyper-v console will function perfectly well

2. Yes. The licensing allows this. Microsoft have not discriminated against the host OS.
