what i mean is the current available sql server versions are
sql 2000
sql 2005
sql 2008
sql 2008 R2
sql Denali

from one package, if need be, can i have 5 connection strings to the above 5 versions of databases?

as long as you are only using data (and not specific features of these versions), it will work

1)when you say "specific features of these versions", can you give an example, please?
2)is the same true for SSIS R2 package : can it hit 2000/5/8/denali data? - same as 2005, only more new features.

if you are in 2000 compatibility mode, don't try anything related to spatial, date, datetime2, ... datatypes
