Setup custom formatted shapes for Visio Org Chart

I have an Excel spreadsheet I am going to use to import into Viso for an Org Chart. The import works fine, but I want to use a different color for each shape type (Executive, Manager, Positions, etc.). What is the best way to accomplish this so when import the data it picks up the correct color and format for each shape?

Thanks in advance.

Excellent.

Just to get started drop at least one of each position type onto the page (you can remove them later when you import from Excel).

On the Data tab, click Data Graphics then select Create New Data Graphic.
Click the New Item button.
In the Data field dropdown, select More fields.
In left of the the Field dialog select User-defined Cells and on the right select ShapeType (this is the field that Visio uses to distinguish executives from managers from others).
 fields dialogClick OK
In the Display as dropdown select Color by Value; you can use the color palette dropdowns to select your own colors.
Click OK twice.

Finally, select all shapes on the page, click the Data Graohics button again and choose your new graphic from the gallery.

The easiest way is to use the data graphics feature that is available in Visio 2007 Professional, Visio 2010 Professional and Visio 2010 Premium.

Which version of Visio are you using? If one of the above, have you ever used data graphics before?

After you answer those questions, I'll know how to proceed... (btw, it is possible to color shapes even if you don't have one of those editions of Visio, but it's much easier if you do).

Thanks for the reply.

I am using Visio 2010. I never used data graphics with Visio, but I am familiar with the concept.

Should have been more specific, I am using Visio 2010 Premium.

It's always nice when there's a simple, built-in solution!

BTW, if you want to copy your custom data graphic to another org chart diagram, simply copy any shape to which you've applied the data graphic. After pasting the shape into the destination document, you can immediately delete the shape -- the data graphic will remain behind.
