How to Configure Laptop to make MTN Modem work
Am new in Nigeria. Got an MTN modem (everyone has them here) to connect to internet. Did all the necessary and inserted it. Will not work on my laptop. Inserted into two other laptops, it worked perfectly. Someone said I need to configure my laptop to get it working. No technical support available here, as far as I can see. My Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1501. OS Windows XP Home Edition. I have installed the MTN Software properly (I installed it on the laptop that worked). It does connect properly, initialising etc and then displaying the 'disconnect' sign. The signal looks fine too. However there is no transfer of bytes - when i open Internet Explorer the page will not display. Any ideas?
This typically means that you have connected to the network but not been authorized. Do you have some sort of id and password that it is not recognizing.

that makes sense. However i was able to use the same modem in two other laptops and it worked perfectly - no question re id or password?? I simply installed the software on another laptop, and then inserted the modem. Worked perfectly. Might it have anything to do with the settings on my laptop?
Assuming your laptop is set up for DHCP, it should pick up the settings it needs automatically.
If you show a solid connection to the network, then check the gateway and dns settings to be sure they are being imported.
At the Command Prompt type "netstat -rn" and see if it looks good.

Is set for DHCP and gateway and dns settins seem right. However at Command Prompt (from Accessories) the command netstato-rn is not recognized.
Also when I open network connections I see for my connection: Local Area Connection 7 Lan or High-Speed Inter... Network cable unplugged.
this might mean something.
Might not be able to get back till tomorrow as power is shutting down here.

The command is NETSTAT -RN, there is no "o" in it.
What is the OS on the laptop.
Do you have a wireless connection show in Connections? Is this a USB modem?

I thought some other program might be interfering and so disabled all (except the essential) in the STARTUP program. It seems to have worked. But we'll see
