mail domain name changing when sent

Hi all,

    We are having a unique issue with exchange 2007 changing domain names randomly when sending to a group.  Example  I send an email to a group with 20 email addresses that includes testuser@google.com.  I get an error back from the exchange server stating that testuser@mydomainname.com doesn't exist and the mail was not delivered, although the 19 others were delivered without problems.  Obviously the name is not in my domain as the address was testuser@google.com not testuser@mydomainname.com.  I am not sure why the exchange server is changing one of the email addresses randomly, but it doesn't seem to be stuck to a particular email address either.  It has happened on multiple different addresses but it seems to be always be just one address that is changed out of all of them in the group.

Anyone have any ideas where I can look?

You can have anything as an EMAIL alias joe@disney.com if you want.
It might be worth the time to check what addresses are actually on your server.

maybe copy and paste these commands into exchange management shell and confirm that you do not already have the address in your domain. Press enter a few times after you run it.

Get-Mailbox -ResultSize “Unlimited” | select name, EmailAddresses | foreach {
“Name: “+$_.name
$_.EmailAddresses | foreach {
“Primary SmtpAddress: $($_.SmtpAddress)”
} else {
“SmtpAddress: $($_.SmtpAddress)”
write-output “”
} > c:\Addresses.txt
i got this from  N3ilb’s Weblog, a fun place

Before you do anything, first find out if you have testuser@mydomainname.com  in your Active Directory.

Places to look
> Mail enabled contacts
> person with similar mailbox / alias.

Another neat trick which you can do, is search the whole AD

Download adfind

extract it to desktop

start > run > cmd
cd to the directory

adfind -sc email:email@domain.com > c:\list.txt

Check and Edit / modify the user details using AdsiEdit
start > run > adsiedit.msc
Navigate to the container listed above.

Thanks for the reply.   Neither testuser@google.com or testuser@mydomain.com shows up as an alternate address for anyone on my server using the command line query or adfind.

If it's not in AD, check if there are any Transport Rules / Address re-writing Transport rules.

There are no transport rules used on the server.

Open EMC
Recipient Config

Check if you have a mail contact for
right click properties
Check email addresses.
See if you applied EAP to the user and does it have testuser@yourodomain.com in the list of email addresses.
