ubuntu amd graphic card drivers

My system has 2 x Radeon HD5970 graphic cards

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04

Installing graphics card drivers for my AMD HD5970 x 2. When i install the drivers and restart the computer, it hangs on startup screen. When i use 1 graphic card everything works fine but when i use 2 graphic cards the computer hangs on startup screen.

The system specs are:

Asus Rampage III extreme MotherBoard
Intel i5
2 x 5970 Graphic card
6gb Ram
250gb HDD
1200w PSU

Would appreciate any advice to solve this strange issue.

Hi!

Have you tried both cards, but one at a time to see if they both works?

Have you tried booting a LiveCD with Ubuntu, does it works?

Have you tried downloading the latest gfx-drivers from ATI?

Other things you can try: Update motherboard BIOS. Insert another HD and install Windows 7 (to verify the problem is Linux related). Try another PSU. Update gfx card BIOS.

What you need to do is specifically install Crossfire by enabling the Community Open-Source Software (Universe) repository and searching for it (or sudo apt-get install crossfire).

Crossfire is the ATI equivelant to nVidia's SLI.
