Linked Server in SQL2005 not connecting.

I have tried everything to get a linked server running.  I can sign onto the servers when I am on the physical box.  But when I create a linked server from one to the other, I get error messages.  One message references the allow remote connections ( I have it checked)  Then it says named pipes is a problem.  I changed it to TCPIP.  I can ping one server to the other.
I have played with this all day.  Does anyone know what I am missing or what I should look at?
