After running updates the SBS 2003 server produced an error:

"lsass.exe-system error: Security Accounts Manager initialization failed" error message - it recomeneded going into Directory services restore.  After attempting to start this the folliwing error comes up no matter how I try to start (safe mode / last known G C / etc):
System error:LSASS.EXE: When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct

I do not want to wipe this system. Are there any ideas???

Do you have a system state backup? You can boot into DSRM and restore.

Is this your only DC?

Take a look at this link

it sounds like you may have a corrupt registry. I would not delete any file like this article says, just rename to *.old so you can rename if the process does not work. You can do this through the recovery console or boot from a live CD.

Thank you, that might have done it, but i was in a pinch and had to reinstall OS and move forward...

All is now resolved after reinstalling OS.

Could not resolve due to time constraints and chose to reinstall OS and move on.
