Open Directory replica setup issue on Lion Server

In our Branch office, we have an XServe Snow Leopard server serving Open Directory,AFP, DNS, LDAP and binded to AD. We purchased a Mac MIni Server Lion with intention to setup an OD Replica to serve a small number of MACs in the Head Office.

Currently the Mac Mini is setup as Stand Alone OD, however when I tried to promote it, it prompted me with error "Cannot replicate a directory with augment user records". I have followed apple support online instruction and ensure that the Mac Mini Server is not LDAP enabled, but it didn't help. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

from the Lion Server: Advanced Administration
https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.7/#apdAC4898FD-75AD-4282-808B-9AAE50F812F1

"Note: If your network has a mix of Mac OS X Server versions 10.6 and Lion Server, one version can’t be a replica of a master of the other version. An Open Directory master of Lion Server won’t replicate to Mac OS X Server v10.6, nor will an Open Directory master of Mac OS X Server v10.6 replicate to Lion Server."

Thanks. We have decided is to keep the XServe running Snow Leopard and we are going to downgrade the Lion Server on the Mac Mini to Snow Leopard server.

So I've copied the Snow Leopard Server install CD onto a USB Key, however even though the USB Key is detected during start up option, I cannot seems to boot the OS install from it. Can you recommend the best method to downgrade OS on the Mac Mini Server?

Generally, you can not install OS that is older that the Mac came with. I mean it is not recommended and not supported.
The problem with your SL CD is that most likely it is version older than 10.6.8. Your best course of action will be to find a different Mac that can boot into Snow Leopard Server CD. Start the Mac Mini in FireWire target mode and connect to that another Mac. Install SL Server on the connected FireWire disk. Update SL Server to 10.6.8. Disconnect Mac Mini. Restart normally it should now.

I've tried the suggested method above, however I wasn't able to install SL Server on the connected Mac MIni TDM. The other Mac I was using is a MacPro and I was getting Mac OSX can't be installed on this computer. Is this because the MacPro is not a server? thus it got rejected by the OS install? I've tried swapping the TDM around, using the the MacPro as the target mode and that didn't work either. It kept asking to reboot and not continuing with the installation.

What's the model of your Mac Pro? Is it up to SL Server requirements?

Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2Ghz 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD. I believe this should be more than sufficient to run SL Server?

I did a look up and found that this may be caused due to the installation CD is not an OEM disc. I used the same CD that was used for the XServe and apparently the CD is specific only for that Server. I don't know if SL Server disc is now available for sale anymore, I'll just have to ask around for now.

Not only that the XServe is a production server, it is also located in branch office with a slow link without local IT support, so this wouldn't go well. Additionally, I was informed by the reseller that SL Server will not work with Mac Mini that came with Lion Server (I'm not sure if that's true though). Unless I can find a better solution, I think I'm just going to remove OD all together on the Mac MIni and let the authentication handled by the XServe.
