Move or Copy from Excel 2007 file to Excel 2003 file

Greetings Experts,

I am using Excel 2007. When I am coping a sheet from an opened .xlsx file to an opened .xls file (which was created with Excel 2003 and opens in compatibility mode) I receive the below error:

"Excel cannot insert the sheet into the destination workbook, because it
contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook."

Saving the old .xls file as .xlsx files solves the problem.

But do you have any idea how to use “Move or Copy” option between xslx and xls files?

mamelas,

If you go to the bottom of an .xlsx sheets you'll see that the last row is 1,048,576. On the other hand, the figure for .xls is 65,536. Even when you aren't using more than 65,536 rows in the .xlsx, Excel still won't allow you copy/move the sheet to a .xls.

Regards,
Brian.

You can select the used range and then copy instead of copying the sheet.

mamelas,

Possibly the easiest way to copy the data is to click on the grey cell to the left of the "A" and above the "1" (as shown below) on the .xlsx . This selects all the cells in the sheet. Copy the cells. Go to the .xls and paste the cells to a new sheet.

(Of course, if the .xlsm is using more than 65,536 rows (or more than 256 columns) then the paste will fail.

Regards,
Brian.
