New Excel (.xlsx) Documents will not convert to Excel 2003 format using Compatibility pack

Hello,

I have a problem opening the new Excel format (.xlsx) in Excel 2003. It seems as though the compatibility pack will not convert the file. I have checked Word to see if it converts .docx which it does so the compatibility pack works there.

What I have done:

Re-installed the compatibility pack twice
Ran Windows update on the machine
Checked for other versions of office
Repaired office
Tried different .xlsx files

I don’t know what else to try, I have looked the problem up and found a thread which suggests the above fixes. The only other thing I can think of is a re-install of office but this is something I would like to avoid for the time being.

Thank you for any help

Carl

What is the specific problem - do you get errors, or no file opened, or missing data? There are limits to what the converter can do - for example if the xlsx file uses more columns or rows than are available in 2003, you will get data chopped off.

Hi Rorya,

The problem is it will not open with the converter at all. A message pops up saying the format is not recognised and select a program to open with. I opened it with Excel 2003 and it then again says This format is not supported. I continued anyway and it showed the document but was un-readable as it was encoded.

Thank you

Open a blank word document:

Go to Tools | Options | General tab | check the "Confirm conversion at Open"

Try and open the document again and select the Compatbility pack.

Are you opening from within Excel, or Explorer? (or does it fail with either?)

The .docx documents convert ok within word but I cannot find the same option within excel.

I have tried both options rorya, and neither will work.

Can you post one of the failing xlsx files just so I can test it with the compatibility pack?

I have attached the test file I created which does not work either. I have tried this document on another system where it converts it fine.

Thank you Book1.xlsx

Yes, that opens fine for me.
Which service packs etc do you have applied to Office - SP3?
It's definitely this version of the compatibility pack that you have? http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3

CJWilkesAuthor Commented:
It is Office - SP3 and it is that compatibility pack

Thank you

Curious. When you reinstalled the pack, did you uninstall the previous version first? If not, can you try uninstalling, reboot, run Windows Update, then reinstall the pack?

Hi Rorya,

I ended up reinstalling Office and updating which seems to have resolved the problem.

Thanks for your help.
