mobile devices - risk assessment

Is it possible to enforce two factor authentication on devices such as blackberries and ipads?

Also, from a corporate management perspective, what other controls should be on these devices if they are being used to access corporate IT services.

For example password policy and ability to lock the device when not in use.

Encryption of data

For sensitive systems disable the allowal of saving data locally.

Any more key ones?

I am also trying to build up a huge list of risks associated with allowing users to use their own smartphones to access corporate services such as email

Hi,

BlackBerry supports Bluetooth smartcard reader for 2 factor authentication.

Good technology also supports Bluetooth smartcard readers.

The Good solution is a self contained encrypted application that stores emails etc. Synced to Exchange it encrypts both OTA and on device using ADS 192. It's also Fips 140-2 and used by Governments.

The containerised approach means it can be used on users devices without compromising the data and is widely used for this. Www.good.com for more info.

Blackberry IS 7 has introduced Balance.

Rob.

Fyi, you'd need encryption, passwords with sufficient complexity, lifetime and history.

In addition, look at device restrictions on corporate assets.

Can you go into more detail here Rob?

Hi,

By this, I mean preventing applications being installed, restricting some Bluetooth functionality, forcing VPN, forcing internal web proxy & content management etc.

Rob.
