If you need to view tkprof output then you need to.  What makes you think you need to?

We cannot answer how long.  To many factors specific to your specific setup.

can't say how long that might take, but trace files are just text.
if you don't want to wait you can grep through it looking for queries.
if you want the summary though, you'll have to run it and wait as slightwv said.

I don't imagine it would take too long though  (minutes - maybe many, but not hours/days)

try to go through the URL for how to use tkproff and as experts advised you need to run 1st then you can check the start and end time :

slobaray,

The question wasn't about what tkprof is and how to use it.  Please stay on topic.

ok, my guess was wrong

you'll just have to wait.  There aren't really any "tkprof tuning" techniques.

What is causing the slowdown?  Disk, memory, cpu?

If disk, can you spread the reads and writes to different disks?

Read from one and write the output to another?

do you need all of the information in the trace?  you could try editing a COPY of it and removing stuff you didn't need.
