One of those things i have never had to do:

I am running an 'untangle' server behind a firewall in a company that has a live IP address on their internet connection.

I now need to "open up" so that a technician can connect remotely to this machine.

how do I "Open" the firewall for that purpose?

Is this when i create a route?

Firewall is 'NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS336GV2'

You will need to create an inbound rule on the NetGear firewall.  You can find the directions to do this on page 50 of the reference manual (ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/FVS336Gv2_RM_14_April10v.pdf)

To create a new inbound service rule in the LAN WAN Rules screen:
1. Click Add under the Inbound Services table to display the Add LAN WAN Inbound
Service screen.
2. Configure the parameters based on the descriptions in Table 4-4 on page 46.
3. Click Apply to save your changes and reset the fields on this screen. The new rule will
be listed in the Inbound Services table.

I am unsure if there is a specific port Untangle uses, but if you are running this on a Windows 2008 server and looking for RDP access, then it would be port 3389
