Unable to receive External Inbound Email

MS exchange server working perfectly in Enterprise environment. Suddenly at 11:15AM stopped receiving external inbound emails.
- Receiving and Sending internally was working
- Sending Externally was working

No DNS, server, network changes had been made.
To resolve tried:
- stop and start of MTA
- Check HDD space and Event logs for any Backflow issues

All came up as ok
Restart of Server corrected email flow issues and inbound external emails flowed. Unknown cause / causes of issue. Does anyone have any ideas?

Only event I could find that possibly maybe an issue was

- The Edge Transport Service is running but the Forefront Agent is not registered
- The MS Information store is running but the Forefront VSAPI Library is not registered

Only thing that comes to mind on this issue at least from what you are saying is possibly a Anti-Virus realtime scan. Do you have the recommended exclusions setup for an exchange server?

The following site lists Microsoft's Recommended Exclusion folders for Exchange 2007. This is for both realtime scan and for regular scan.

Also check with u r ISP, have they made any changes with ur MX , A or PTR record.

Try sending mail using telnet and see whether that work

If you get some errors please paste it here

We don't have AV on the exchange server just on the Edge server which scans and process's email.

ISP has not made any changes, and this would be a more longer term issue. This issue only happens about once a month and just stops receiving emails. MTA restart doesn't assist it requires a full server restart.
What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

How about windows updates?

Nope Updates are not set to install, there are scheduled and rolled out weekly.

It looks like you were right one of the network admin guys was installing an update every couple of weeks without restarting the server. This then stopped the MTA even though it looked like it was running andyou could not restart it.
It wasnt until we have an EBS log file issue which completely filled up the C drive and therefore stopped exchange that we were able to track down the issue.
