Win 7 partial boot

Dell laptop, Win 7...

Power on...
I get "Starting Windows"...
The colored balls float around...
Then I have a black screen, normal cursor and the circle that indicates something is hapenning...(like the hourglass in XP) shows for about 2 seconds...
Then nothing else happens...

I wind up with a black screen with a cursor which moves with the touch pad...

Pulled HD and put it on another comptuer...did virus scan, clean, MBAM, clean...ran chkdsk...
Put it back in the laptop...
I get the exact same results as before...

Thinking bad MBR, etc...
Thoughts...and ideas appreciated...

I should have mentioned...ran the Win 7 repair from boot...no joy...
And it boots the same in normal or safe mode...

Have not yet tried Cd repair...hoping something easier...

Do I fix MBR the same way in Win 7 as in XP...???

Yes the fix MBR is about the same, however if there's registry error(which most likely for your case); the fixmbr will not work...

Didn;t work...:>(

Ok...googled all over this issue...only thing I didn;t do is a repair install...I have not done a Win 7 repair install...
a little unsure of  myself on this one....so I decided to do a complete install and that will fix the issue for sure....(I hope)...

Couple hours later I did the re-install and so far things are working great...

thanx for the  help guys...
Guys...I split points out between the 3 of you...
You tried to help, had good suggestions...I did all of them...but had to rebuild...
Appreciate your time...
