With your VB background, shell scripting shouldn't be too much of a reach.  If you're still into non-screen based knowledge, the O'Reilly series of box (Unix shell scripting, Running Linux, etc.) are incredibly good resources.  They also publish an intro one for MySQL, and several more advanced ones (Stored Procedures, etc.)

I know this is kind of a vague answer to a wide question, but I was where you are about 15 years ago, and am a fully self taught Unix admin/DBA now - the key is to play, play, play!  Get an old laptop or server or something, and installed Linux - Apache - MySQL - PHP (aka "LAMP") and write some simple web sites that display the contents of your database in table form - really helps you to see how it all fits together.

Good luck, and welcome!
