NOTE: a lot of answers provided here are not provided by people that are paid.

the only limitation you will find on a FortiGate 80 series will be based on the CPU, as far as routing and network speeds, no you will not have an issue. if you are going to use it for what it was intended, a UTM device.. (eg. router, firewall, IPS/IDS, traffic logging) you may start to see sluggish response from the device, but again, it depends on what you are doing and how many web sessions you are going to be governing. operating a single vpn to consolidate your 2 offices it should not be much of a problem at all, as the fortigate devices i have used (including the 60, 80, 100 and 200 series)  the 60s and the 80s have been used in 40-50 user deployments with heavy reliance on ips/ ids, web filtering, routing and network antivirus, and i have yet to see any real performance issues.

TL;DR: your performance will be limited by UTM functionality, not core routing and network speed.

Hi xanandu:

thank you for your post, so if i understood you correctly the only thing that can make the network feel slugging is the CPU (device hardware performance) ?

close, but not quite, the fortigate 80 series has 10/100 networking hardware on it, so the max network speed you will get out of the device is 100 mbit. This is a hard limit, you cannot break past it. you are far more likely to be limited by the other functions the fortigate is providing. depending on how big a network you are protecting, including how many users and how many servers are hosted behind it, those will be your major dependancies. the more work the fortigate has to do, the slower it will be. this being said the engines in the fortinet devices are scaled to such a point that this should not be an issue unless you have 200-400 HEAVY web browsing users behind your firewall and you need them using all 36mbit of traffic at the same time, constantly. even then, depending on how optimized your web filters are... you may still get full bandwidth.
