Pop Mail Failure on Exchange 2010

I tried setting up Pop mail on Exchange 2010 using this:

But as soon as I configured the new connector and allowed relay, all mail on my exchange server stopped flowing and built up in the queues.  I had to delete the new connector and reboot the machine to get my mail functionality back.

What I want to do is enable pop mail users to send mail to the outside, and I'm having a problem doing this.

Thanks for any help with this.

do want to enable pop3 on your exchange 2010 ?
if yes then you don't need to create any connector for that pop3 and IMAP4 is preinstalled on exchange 2010 just need to enable it if you want to use it
just have a look at this link:-

Actually the pop is working in terms of downloading email, it's the sending that's not working.

I guess the question should be "how do I enable mail relay to outside mail for pop users?"

Do you think I should post a different question?

you need to check the authentication methods on your client receive connector under server configuration -> Hub Transport -> Receive Connector- Property -> Client Receive Connector Authentication Tab  Make Sure that Basic Authentication is enable as well as Check Anonymous Users, Exchange User, Exchange Servers are selected under Permission Groups Tab

if you still have issue after applying the above setting then go to your outlook - account settings - More settings - Outgoing Server - Select Log on Using and provide user name and password in this format
for example if your domain name is abc.com then you have to use as
and click ok

I tried everything, every setting change I can make in outlook and on the receive connector, and I'm still getting this:

'550 5.7.1 Unable to relay

And it's not really RELAYING.  It's one of my own users trying to send outside mail.  Which works fine with an exchange connection but not with a pop3/smtp connection.

This is what I had to run to get this working:

Get-ReceiveConnector "External Relay" | Add-ADPermission -User "NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON" -ExtendedRights "ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient

Once I ran this everything worked.

As you have run the above command on your exchange. That could make your exchange server an open relay and could cause your server for sending spam and your ip will be listed on blacklists
So to make sure that your exchange is not  a open relay please test it on
and do SMTP diagnostics
