Exchange Server 2010 Mailbox Management Question

Hello
I want to setup the exchange 2010 retention policy to clean out user's deleted items, perhaps leaving only the most recent emails in there. I have a few questions though.

1. Since nothing is being moved to the archive mailbox, do I need to set it up? Or can I just setup the retention policy and link it to the mailbox? I am not sure if the process only runs if the archive is enabled.

2. I ran this process on my mailbox - the retention tag is configured to as type Deleted Items and the action is to Permanently Delete items, the retention period is 30 days. However after it ran I still have emails from 5/10 in there. Is it 30 days from the day it was deleted? That's the only thing I can imagine, just wanted to confirm. Does this look configured correctly?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, I think it's pretty much the same thing, except that for this I don't need the archiving mailbox.
Looks like this is what I want. I tested on mine and it works.

Thanks
