VPN Configuration on Sonicwall TZ100

Hi everyone,

A collegue of mine just bought a sonicwall TZ100 to be put with a customer who needs VPN-access to his workplace. The thing is that there is only a Windows 7 machine at the workplace for our application (no server is needed).

Normally, we configure VPN PPTP to a Windows Server 2008 with RRAS who handles the VPN-request. Now the sonicwall needs to authenticate with built-inn users. Normally you should have to use the application on the clients to connect to the Sonicwall. Is there a way of not using the application?

We were thinking about installing RRAS on a windows 7. I have found some posts:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/927884af-d0bc-40fb-9233-612901bcfa2f
Is this the right way and which ports need to be forwarded to reach the windows 7 machine?

Thanks in advance!! I hope we can just configure this on the sonicwall itself without having to use the application on the clients.

Cheers!

the easiest way to do this is to run the SonicWALL VPN wizrd.  if you look near the top of the web GUI you'll see "Public Server Wizard"  You can set up the VPN from there.  You will need to download the SonicWALL gloab VPN client from here.

http://help.mysonicwall.com/Applications/vpnclient/

You will also need to create a user account for teh user to VPN in to the network, since there is no server or LDAP to authenticate against.  You can find that here

http://howto.techworld.com/security/448/setting-up-a-user-to-network-vpn/

I may also suggest looking into some type of server that will give the user direct machine access such as logmein.com or "go to my PC"

Thanks for the feedback SuperTaco!! I was aware of the sonicwall vpnclient, but is there a possibility to do this without the vpnclient?

I will be setting it up tomorrow with my collegue so want as much information as possible.

Thanks for your input!!

The TZ100 supports SSLVPN, so once you add the user, you could use a browser to coonect. Alternately you can download NetExtender to use SSLVPN, and bypass a browser.

Thanks for the suggestions!! We were thinking of this but the problem is that they only have a license for 2 users and they need more..

Do you have any idea how much extra licenses cost and will you advice this?

Additional Sonicwall SSLVPN licenses have a list price as follows:

    1 user     $  50
    5 user     $215

Note that the TZ100 can support a maximum of only 5 SSLVPN connections, and comes with one.

Note: the count is of simultaneous SSLVPN connections (logins)

Hi guys,

Thanks again for the replies! She configured it as a L2TP-server with a pre-shared key.
