Restore active directory to another test environment

I would like to restore AD to another virtual  test environment ,
I want to take a backup somehow I guess take a system state backup of a domain controller and restore it on a member server in the test domain and then I will have a domain controller of that domain ?

I am not sure what I am doing , but I want to restore AD to my test envirment and have a working complete AD structure when I am done
