vmWare vCenter 5 Convert Template to VM operation takes so long time to complete

Hi Guys,

I have 3 vmware esxi 5 hosts. Each one has about 5 virtual machines. Host 01 has some windows 2008 templates. When I try to convert the templates into a Virtual Machines, it keeps running for almost 24 hours. The template is just 9GB in size.

Every host has its own virtual switch connected to the physicial network by 1GBPs network card.

Couple weeks ago, this operation ran smoothly but now I don't know why it is taking so long, sometimes it times out and I have to start all over again and wait for more 24 hours to the copy operation to be finished.

I'm not a vmware specialist so I don't know where to start looking for to troubleshoot this issue. Would you mind help me out?

Tks!

What datastore are you converting a Virtual Machine to a Template on?

Slow RAID 5 datastores, single RAID 1 datastores, slow write speeds, lack of Battery Backup Write Cache module on HP Smart Array can cause very slow write conversion times.

Actually I'm trying to convert a template on to a virtual machine. Each host has a RAID 5 internal SAS disks. Datastores are running on these disks. There is no FC yet. I will try to stop all vm's this night and try to run the convert operation again and let you know.

Thanks for the very fast answer!
