no mouse in xp

Hi,
i have an xp system that has one problem..
the mouse doesnt work..it isnt hardware as the mouse works if I boot from cd or usb.
The mouse does work however if I remote to the machine.

no event log errors, mouse appears in control panel and ..even when i create virtual PC version of this system there is no mouse unless I remote desktop to it.

would love some clues

this was a driver issue i had . Try uninstalling the  usb ide and other controller drivers. This fixed my problem. I had installed drivers that came with the MB for ps2 usb ide etc and it messed up my mouse.

as an update:
user profile makes no difference - no mouse before login
sfc says no problems
going to copy mouclass.sys driver from another system as a test but not holding my breath
You might have some luck with the driver from another system, but XP has everything on board, and SFC did not find any issues.

Be ready to re-install Windows XP at this point. .... Thinkpads_User
too many apps that need to stay, and we can remote into this machine to use it just for those apps
just another update and I might be foreced to close this question.

I moved the original PC into a Virtual PC on a Windows 7 box as the client has a database app that was written for them about 10 years ago that we have no way of reinstalling/moving etc, and we had been getting concerned about the welfare of the original PC - especially with no mouse.

As I said - there was no mouse in the virtual environment, as I expected as it was obviously software related. However, when I installed the integration features into the virtual PC there is now a mouse. So obviously the remote desktop and the integration features include their own mouse (and keyboard) features that work around the problem.

For anybody else reading this in future..
I installed microsoft intellipoint drivers, I replicated the mouse settings in the registry and I copied the drivers from a working PC over. All to no avail. in device manager it would always say "the device cannot start" on the mouse
I think your basic (real) system is somehow hosed. I know you don't want to reinstall, but that is probably the only real solution other than to leave as is or virtualized.  .... Thinkpads_User
If someone has a similar problem in future - these would be the best two suggestions.
Thanks for your help
