how to do that with apache

i have a classified ad website. i want my user to be able to give the link of their page like the following

http://www.mywebsite.com/theirusername

You can do what you're describing by default, but then you'd have to put all the user web pages in the DocumentRoot (normally /var/www/html)  Most times, this isn't desirable for administrators.

It's better if you use the UserDir directive and set it to say "public_html".

Then the user say has a directory called /home/theirusername/public_html

And it can be accessed at http://www.mywebsite.com/~theirusername

(notice the ~, or tilde character, usually just to the leff of the number 1 key on your keyboard)
