is it possible to run dcpromo on a sbs 2003 server and turn it into a member server?

Hi

i currently have a windows 2003 sbs server

this server does all of the usual functions (dhcp, dns, file server, domain controller etc etc)

it also hosts a specific sql based applaication that was installed a long time ago and for which there is no longer support available. (it currently works perfectly)

the server it is on it quiet old and needs to be update and the follwoing is waht i plan to do.

install a new server with windows 2008 Server R2 with Hyper V

virtualise the sbs box and move it to the new server
install a new virtual windows 2008 DC on the same server and migrate the AD roles to it
what i need to know is can i then run dcprom on the sbs box and effectively turn it into a member server of the 2008 DC - if this is possible then it would allow me leave my LOB application very well alone and all would be well - hopefully!

so to summarise ... is it possible to run dcpromo on a sbs 2003 server and turn it into a member server?

regards

In a word - No
An SBS machine expects to be a DC and will complain if its not

Kcts is right. You would have to uninstall the SBS components, or reinstall SBS and NOT go to step two

would running dcpromo and uninstall the sbs componenet suffice?

if not could i upgrade the sbs box to full 2003 and then run dc promo?  my main object is to keep my LOB applaiction running and not have to reinstall it...

It is a violation of the SBS license to run it in any other way other than as a DC with all FMSO roles. You can virtualize it if the SBS license is retail, NOT if it is OEM. You can make another machine (physical or virtual) a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller. You can move everything over to the new machine EXCEPT the AD FMSO roles.

That will leave it as a standalone server, with none of the SBS components. If you want to go from an SBS domain to a conventional Active Directory domain, you need to do a little more than just dcpromo the existing SBS server. There are the Exchange mailboxes to consider (if they are used), and Shrepoint/SQL (if those are used).
