Cannot find or create font 'Z@RE098.tmp'

My CPA is sending me pdf's that I cannot read.
I continuously receive this error message, "Cannot find or create font 'Z@RE098.tmp'. Some characters may not display correctly" and boy howdy do they not!  I get only dots or asterisks!  I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard vs 9.4.6  The number for the font sometimes reads 'Z@RDB5D.tmp'

The pdf's were all created off of a state website regarding applying for a tax # and business license.

I am hoping you can find a solution.

Thank you!

Toquas_Crafts,

The basic problem is that your computer doesn't have the fonts your CPA is using; the solution is to have him zip them and send them to you.

Unless the person who created the document takes the time to embed the fonts into the document, you won't be able to see them. This usually happens when someone uses a font that doesn't come as part of the default configuration of the receiving computer. If you have a standard Windows machine, for example, it probably doesn't have the Franklin Gothic family of fonts installed. So when he includes them in a document, all you're going to see is garbage, no matter how nice it looks on his machine.

Hi Toquas_Crafts,

It's certainly possible that ericpete is correct and it's simply a missing font on your computer, in which case the following link may help:
http://notes.theorbis.net/2009/05/solved-acrobat-reader-cannot-find-or.html

(The above is for Adobe Acrobat 9.)

But it's also possible that it could be a problem related to your Adobe Acrobat installation, so as a troubleshooting step, try to open the PDF with a different PDF viewer. One of the best freebies out there is Foxit Reader:
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/

It could also be that the font is installed, but the Adobe font files are corrupt. Here's a link to a similar thread for Adobe Acrobat 8:
http://quomon.com/question-Cannot-find-or-create-the-font-font-name-in-Adobe-Acrobat8-6053.aspx

It may apply to your Adobe Acrobat 9 (just change the folder/file names accordingly).

Regards, Joe
Thanks, Joe. I've only run into the problem because the fonts were missing -- but the next time a client sends me something, I'll know what else to look for.

ASKER

Eric and Joe,
THANK YOU so much for your comments!

Eric: My CPA purposefully changed the font and re-sent the files to me (it still did not work).

Joe: I downloaded FoxIt, I still could not open the documents.
I followed the instructions for this link http://quomon.com/question-Cannot-find-or-create-the-font-font-name-in-Adobe-Acrobat8-6053.aspx you provided.  I could not find this from "Application Data" and after... but I did look through Acrobat 9.0
\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0\

I also could not find these files (I also did a search for them as ...Fnt08 and ...Fnt09 not sure if the file ext is an "i" or an "L" so I searched both ways - nothing found, nothing found for "UserCache.bin" either)
AdobeCMapFnt08.lst
AdobeSysFnt08.lst
UserCache.bin

My CPA ended up printing / scanning / re-emailing the documents to me.  They are not "pretty" but I do have the information needed.

Maybe I should just un-install and re-install on both computers?  One is Vista the other is XP..  I've not had a problem before.

Again... THANK YOU both for the suggestions you provided.
I do appreciate it.

Regards,
Toqua
