Excel 2007 - File in use by "another user"

We have an excel document that when opened by a user, they get the message that the file is in use by "another user". The file is actually opened by another user but for some reason the name of the user no longer appears. This causes a delay because the employee has to call around for 10 minutes trying to find out who has the file open or I have to log into the server and check opened files which shows the user that has it open.

This has not been an issue until a couple of weeks ago. We haven't changed the format of the file nor server OS. The only thing I can think that has changed is the employees may have received critical or security updates for Excel 2007.

The file is located on a network share.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The network share isn't reporting the name as it should.

Is it part of a domain?

trying giving everyone full perms to the file and see if its something to do with that...

I remember we had the same error in our office, except it would always report one person had it open when really it was someone else.

We had that issue as well with this file. Microsoft's solution was to convert it from an .xls to .xlsx

That seemed to stop the issue with it showing the wrong person having it open for a while. Now, it just shows up as "another user".

I will get full permissions to the users and see if that fixes the issue.

Giving full permissions seems to have fixed the issue. Once the permissions were changed, I had to get the person who had it open to close and reopen the file. After that, it shows his name other than "another user".

I will give it a couple of days to make sure the issue is resolved. The file is used multiple times a day. After that, I will accept your solutiion.

Thanks again.

Now just remember to limit the file permissions back down to something you feel is safe, so no one overwrites stuff, deletes, appends, etc.

No problem standing by.

Thanks man! Again just remember to drop the perms on the folder to a safe level.
