How do I force a Macbook with 10.5 to use a new a HP printer Driver?

Hello Experts,

I have a client who has a Vista desktop on their home network. that PC has a usb connected HP Photosmart 7660. I shared the printer and named it HP7600 on their network. the other PCs can use it fine.

If I connect the printer to a Macbook with OSX 10.5 via a USB the Macbook loads a driver for a HP Photosmart 7600 series and printing is perfect.

But I want to connect the printer over the network. So I added it using smb://workgroup/VistaPC/HP7600 and then when I try to find the driver it is not listed. the highest driver is for a photosmart 7100 and it don't work.

If I go to HP.com they won't let me download a new driver because they say that OSX 10.5 already includes a driver for the 7600 series.

How do I find and use the driver that gets automatically used when i connect the printer with the usb cable?

Thanks,

Lasareath

Go to this local website on your computer:  http://localhost:631/printers/?

Click on the printer whose driver you want to change.

Change the "Administration" button to "Modify Printer"

Then hitting the "continue" button twice at the bottom of the page should bring you to the page to allow you to change drivers.

Thanks.  I'll try that when I get to their house.  I should be there tomorrow.

When I select Modify a drop-down box wants me to log in. I try my clients credentials that he uses for installing software and it does not work

it says:

To view this page, you must log in to area “CUPS” on localhost:631.

What is this "CUPS" ?

I found the location where I can change the drivers but the driver is not on that list. I get the same list as when I added the printer 4 days ago.

The Mac is just too smart for itself. When i connect the printer via USB I get the correct drivers, when I try to add it over the network I cannot find the correct drivers.

Maybe the driver that works is a USB only driver.

The Solution is that there is no solution. If you want to share a USB printer accross your network then you better only have PCs.
