reclaiming hardisk space (thin type) in vmware esx server 4.1

Dear all,

we have one vm having two disks, c: drive and d: drive. c: drive for OS.
D: drive for data, both disks are thin type. d: drive 800 GB. filled with almost 650 GB data.
so we moved some files (around 300 GB) to another storage area.(storage2) But this vm located in storage1. Now after moving these files also storage1 space not increased. I shutdown the machine and restarted the VM. eventhough it was not freed up space in storage1. How to reclam the diskspace in storage1. I checked vm d: drive vmdk file still it is showing 650 GB.

Once you write data to a thin disk, it is taken up, no matter if you remove data off of it. Thin disks don't decrease in space...only increase.

Wasted disk space. Virtual disks set to grow dynamically will never shrink when users or applications remove data. As a result, that physical disk space cannot be allocated to other virtual systems. It also needlessly increases time and resources necessary to perform backups for data continuity and live migration to maintain optimal service levels.

I would recommend and use Diskeeper V-Locity 3 - the Cure, designed for ESX/ESXi.

Automatic zeroing of free space. This powerful engine zeros out unused data blocks on virtual disks and makes virtual disk compaction easy. It also allows Storage vMotion (VMware) or Quick Storage Migration (Hyper-V) to compact a disk on the fly in most virtual platforms when they migrate virtual disks across physical hosts. Automatic Space Reclamation occurs online with no need for a maintenance window.

Dear Hanccocka,

I downloaded this product while installing it is asking three options, which one i have to select, like guest, or Host agent for VMWare or Host agent for hyper v, which one i have to select guest or Host agent for vmware. Than for freeing up space in datastorage what should i do
ok
now i shutdown the vm, i installed vlocity in my laptop, than i connected esxhost, than i can see the vmdk files (Hdds), for compacting it is asking to connect esx hot again than i am not able to connect.
i am facing an error. please check attachment for error report.

why it is not connecting i don't know, because it is already connected, that is why it is showing target vmdk files, but why it is not connecting through connect esx button.
