ms sql server - DBCC shrink database

ran a dbcc shrink database command and the tables are gone in the explorer window...did it save off the files somewhere else?

    Did you Refresh?  You have to Refresh the view a lot in Object Explorer.

    Yup, most likely a refresh issue.  DBCC SHRINKDB can cause major performance issues, but will not actually drop tables or remove them.  Give it time to finish, or do a SP_WHO2 ACTIVE to see if it's blocking something, you should see the CPU/DiskIO go up on the SPID after a little while if you refresh it (execute SP_WHO2 ACTIVE again).
