Hi all,

I'm running in a strange freeze.
I have a new SBS 2008 installation and clients connected okay.
I have run all updates then it asked for a reboot.
After rebooting the sysyem becomes unresponsive. It loads till ctrl + alt +del screen.

But pressing the buttons doesn't do anything.

Clients can access a mapped network drive (during server boot) but once the server gets to the state (press ctrl + alt +delete) the mapped network drive becomes unresponsive too.

However a ping is still availalbe.

What could I do?

Your hardware is insufficient....

I am not surprisde you are having hardware hiccups.

I would migrate to better hardware

You have a p4 3.2... pretty sure that is a hyperthreading CPU which means it has only one physical core.

Your RAM is at 4Gb.

This puts you at the bare minimum to install this operating system. It will run but badly... a good configuration has multiple cores, hyper threaded with 8 Gb of RAM or more.

The cpu is a Pentium 4 Core 2 duo  3.4 GHz so it has 2 cores.
I know it is not much of a server but I think it is capable of doing the things. Because it did run yesterday and the day before.

After doing some updates it got to this new "state" I can order some new rams to get 8GB
That would give some "space" I guess. But I think the problem resides in the updaes or so.

I have seen SBS servers with a quad core xeon and only 4Gb or RAM that ran badly at times.  I won't install one without at least 8Gb in it. The more CPU behind the RAM, the better it will run.  The core 2 duo is better than what you original posted but it is still a workstation cpu not a server cpu.

You can improve your performance by doubling up your RAM, assuming the server mother board can handle it, but I would not expect seamless performance on that cpu.

But why Can I acces my network shares perfect during server bootup. And I can run programs dunring bootup time (exe files from network share) once it has booted to the screen ctrl + alt +del iI cannot acces the network shares anymore. I don't think this is ram based (it could)

I am sure it can be traced to the actual processes that are starting up at those times, exchange, etc...it doesnt really matter. I am positive this is your issue.

the shares never recover? are you running any security software on the server?

I have replaced the rams with bigger 8GB and all the updates are installed so now it works again.

So, the server got additional ram and updates as per description. And now it works
