IF I put a password on Oracle listener, will it affect current users who are using the database?

The Oracle database is up and running. I'm wondering if I add password to the listener do I need to restart database or to run some cmd to make it work and maybe affect current users who visit our database.

We use Oracle 9i and Windows server 2003 as OS.

Thank you very much!

No.

It only effects remote users wanting to perform admin tasks on the listener.

missed a couple of the questions:

No was for current users connected.

No need to restart the database.

You will need to reload/restart the listener.

after setting the password

lsnrctl reload

to reset the listener to use it.

it will have no affect on users or databases already connected though

NEW Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 1.5

With Office 365, it’s your data and your responsibility to protect it. NEW Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 eliminates the risk of losing access to your Office 365 data.

In one rare situation it can.  If you are using shared sockets (USE_SHARED_SOCKET), shutting down the listener will drop all active connections.

Not sure about using the reload command.

USE_SHARED)SOCKET is rare and it is doubtful you are doing it but I need to mention it just in case.

Sorry a quick question: Can I do this to add password? Thanks. I am a junior user of Oracle

LISTENER =
  (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
   PASSWORDS_LISTENER=******
    (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
    )
    (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = pub&*^r)(PORT = 0000))
    )
  )

I believe that will work but you might need to set it up as encrypted using lsnrctl

I suggest you follow a proven script:
http://www.petefinnigan.com/ramblings/set_listener_password.htm

Thank you very much! I am running the encrypted password setting and get :

LSNRCTL> set current_listener listener
Current Listener is listener
LSNRCTL> change_password
Old password:
New password:
Reenter new password:
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXTPROC0)))
Password changed for listener
The command completed successfully
LSNRCTL> save_config
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXTPROC0)))
TNS-01169: The listener has not recognized the password
LSNRCTL>

I made it through. So there's no need to reload the listener right?

I believe you still need to reload/restart it.

I keep saying restart because I don't like reload but cannot remember why.
