Can you redo a LUN if you are not using the whole storage?

I created a LUN with 2 tb of storage. However, I'm in a crunch for space right now and I have 1 tb free on that lun that's attached to a host. I want to take 500 gb from there and create a new lun and attach to a new host. How Can I do that? Is it possible?

LUN shrink is available if you have the latest FLARE code and it's a thin LUN so it's possible to do. However, since you've run out of space you're not going to be able to get there as you need to migrate the LUN into a thin pool if it's a traditional thick LUN.

So: if you're running latest FLARE and your 2TB LUN is already in a thin pool then: rock on! If you're not, I'm afraid you're out of luck.

I have flare 29 so I may be out of luck... how do I know if the lun is either thick or thin?

FLARE 29 supports thin LUNs. Talk to your EMC account team - they will supply the enabler as a freebie.

To tell if it's a thick or thin LUN is easy: right click on the LUN and select Properties. You'll see the LUN type there. A LUN in a RAID group can only be "Traditional". A LUN in a pool can be "Thick" or "Thin".

Note that if you're not already got pools set up then this won't solve your immediate problem as you need some space to migrate into a pool from a traditional LUN. And if you had that space, you probably wouldn't have needed to ask this question... :-)

The virtual provisioning license will help you in the future though.
