How to delete a shape from word document

I used some shape rectengular, circle and put some text and move the text front.
later I deleted the text and saved, shape were remain.
Now, I tried to select the shape I dont need anymore and delete it.
But I cant.. would you please advice how can I delete it.
I am using MS word 2003.

On the drawing toolbar, click the icon that looks like the mouse pointer. Now you can select the shape and delete it.

click the "Select Objects" icon on the Drawing toolbar. The icon looks like a mouse pointer. Then drag a box around the shape you want to select.

Does that select it?
