How to backup several TB of pictures

I have a photographer friend who has several TB of images from weddings he has done over the years. Currently he backs up about a years worth of data onto two  1-2TB hard drive. one he has at his business, and the other he has off site somewhere. This is a little over kill, and he is looking for a good solution.

Tapes would gets costly, and are old. Cloud solutions would be good, but the cost for storage and the amount of data traveling over the line, when he shoots two weddings in a weekend (~75-125Gb) would be too much of a bandwidth hog.

My question to pose to you is to see if anyone has a similar situation and how do you handle it.

He runs a mac rig and would like to keep it that way too.

    Accepted Solution

External drives are your only option for the restrictions you gave unless he has the budget for a high end tape drive.  They are really fast now if his mac can handle a modern SAS card.
LTO5 is 1.5GB native 3GB compressed and faster than any hard drive.
Initial cost is high but tapes are cheap.
