Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R2 nightly backup intermittent due to offline usb hard drive

Hi

Every night apart from friday i run an incremental backup to a rotation of usb hard drives. On friday i run a full backup.

The user in charge of the drives swaps the drive every morning in the same manner.

On occasions the drive sits at offline and the backup fails to run even though the drive is viewable and browseable in "my computer".

If every night before the backup runs and make the drive online and scan the drive in backup exec it never fails.

Any ideas?

thanks

Depending on the model of the USB drive, some are set to power themselves down. The problem is that it will not always "wake up" is there a manual\auto switch on device. If so, then I would change it to manual. Also, how do you have the drive configured. There is a specific process recommended by Symantec: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO55855

There is also a SBS (not sure if that is what you have) Windows 2008 server USB compatibility list. You may want to check you device agains that:

Workaround suggestion.

If you restart the Backup Exec service(s), does it see the disk as 'normal'

Maybe make a batch script to stop and start the service(s) then use Task Scheduler to run it everyday about 10 minutes before your backup job.

The backup server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 fully serviced packed.  The backup software is Backup Exec 2010 R2 fully patched.

They did, but with specific configuration. The problem comes in how the drive is set up to be used with BE. That is still true, which is why I sent you the link to the "how to".

Ok, so as long as the drive it setup as per your link i should not have any issues?

You shouldn't, but that is not a 100% guarantee. I moved away from USB drives about 2 years ago on 12.5, so I cannot speak for 2010.

HI

I setup the drives as per the help sheet from symantec but everytime a drive is unplugged it goes to offline but when its plugged in again and the server can see it the backup software does not automatically force it back online so the backup fails with no media to use.  I have to manually put every drive back online at the moment.  Any ideas?
