SBS 2003 - Activesync

I am attempting to setup ActiveSync for Android\iphones and am experiencing a couple of issues. I have gone through the recommended setup and am able to connect to OWA (SSL\Forms based access required) and OMA through IE on a pc and on a mobile device.

I can add\verify the account but when attempting to sync it displays an error of  "Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed."

When I test the account through testexchangeconnectivity.com, I receive the following:

"An HTTP 401 Unauthorized response was received from the remote Unknown server. This is usually the result of an incorrect username or password. If you are attempting to log onto an Office 365 service, ensure you are using your full User Principal Name (UPN)."

Looking at the eventviewer, I see the following error:
Source: ServerActiveSync
Event ID: 3005
Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [sbserver.xxx.local] User: [xxx@xxx.com] HTTP status code: [500]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.

Steps taken to troubleshoot:
1 - rebuilt IIS virtual directory
2 - Disable\renabled activesync in user account
3 - deleted\recreated MS Activesync in ESM
4 - Verified SMTP ExchangeVDir in registry.
and a number of items also that escape me at this point.

Any help is appreciated.

are you trying to do an automatic setup or a manual setup?
Does Exchange 2003 have Service Pack 2 or greater installed?

I would download and run the SBS BPA and fix any issues it finds

Alan - I have.. twice. It's at a point where I went from the OMA site working to the now it gives the following error after logging in thru IE:

Outlook(R) Mobile Access is supported only on Microsoft(R) Exchange Server 2003. Currently your mailbox is stored on an older version of Exchange server. Please contact your system administrator for additional assistance.

Also ERCA, give a Foldersync and 500 error.

Re-run the Connect to the Internet Wizard - let it complete, but change nothing.  If it fails 1st time around - run it again.  If it completes happily, then check the IIS settings again and they get changed and not always to the right settings.

If you make changes - run iisreset and test again.

I have one other one that I have access to but it is not a SBS2003 server.

Please have a read of the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839288

Suggests that you have redirection going on with Exchange Virtual Directories - which would explain the 500 errors nicely.

It also suggests you might not have the Exchange-OMA virtual Directory any more - which requires you to read and follow KB817379

thanks. The registry key was spelled incorrectly. Now, I am getting a Server Rune time error when going to OWA.

Disable FBA please via Exchange System Manager> Servers> Your Server> Protocols> HTTP> Exchange Virtual Server> Properties> Settings Tab> Uncheck Enable Forms Based Authentication.

Once unchecekd - run iisreset and then right-click on Exchange Virtual Directory in IIS Manager and try to browse - do you see OWA working?

broberc6Author Commented:
I can't reset IIS, my client is in the office now. OWA works with Forms-based authentication on.
0

Alan HardistyCo-OwnerCommented:
If you want to resolve this issue - we need to check OWA without FBA enabled as this is a necessary step to take to troubleshoot it.

If you can't run it now - please follow my advice when you can and then let me know.

Can you double-check if you are facing any other events @ the exchange-servers event-logs

What is the response for the URL

Alan HardistyCo-OwnerCommented:
Okay - that is good.

Can you now try to browse the exchange-oma vitual directory.  What happens?

broberc6Author Commented:
When attempting to reach http://mai.server.com/Microsoft-server-Activesync it returns HTTP/1.1 501 Not Implemented.

When I browse Exhange-OMA thru IIS, I am first presented with a SSL cert warning about the name mismatched. But the name on the cert is the same of the server. If I continue past this, mailbox is presented.

Alan HardistyCo-OwnerCommented:
The 501 not implemented is to be expected.

What name is on your SSL certificate e.g., mail.yourdomain.com ?
0

broberc6Author Commented:
The cert lists mail.server.com.

It is a 30 day cert from Geotrust which expires in 10 days.

Alan HardistyCo-OwnerCommented:
Sorry - very busy with work.

The 3005 errors can most often be ignored, but you might want to update your Massync.dll by requesting the hotfix from MS (KB967046)

If your iphone is attempt to connect without-SSL, check on the IIS server, if the "Require SSL" is selected
you may need to unselect the "Require SSL" on the "Default web Site" (or the site where the EAS is located)

What happens when you do the same on the Microsoft-Server-Activesync virtual directory?

When I browse on the MSA virtual directory, I get prompted for a login. After logging in, I see the "website is unable to display the webpage"

Great stuff - glad the problem is resolved.

In terms of points allocation - the usual method is to allocate points to the comment or comments that helped you to find the solution and the default Grade should be a Grade A.

If you had to do some research yourself, then a Grade B is perfectly okay as you were helped to find the solution, or pointed in the right direction, but had to do some digging / research yourself.

Either way - they are your points to allocate and the Grade is up to you.
