Copyright Infringement notice
I received two copyright infringement notices and I need to track down the user who downloaded the illegal material. The notice gives me an external IP address and an IP port number. How can I track down this user?

I know that our company owns the IP address, but since it is an external address I need to map it back to the internal address so I can find out who that user is.
You cannot. I can set up a host machine with a 192.168.x.y address, and then set up a virtual machine with a 192.168.aa.z address. You cannot map back through that.

Ok, thanks for your help. Do you know of any software or appliance that I could install that would help me to track this activity in the future?
If your users are on a server, you might be able to monitor server activities and normally, the DHCP reservation list will map internal IP addresses to users. So you can try down that avenue.

So then, the best you can do is put the IP address into SmartWhois or like tool, and then go to the owner of the IP range and ask them to trace it.
For example, I have a home IP in Rogers IP range in Canada. All you can do is complain to Rogers because I do not show up anywhere. .... Thinkpads_User
