Indexing a folder on a mapped drive

We have a folder out on our file server that is apart of a general mapped drive for everyone. We have a handful of users that would like to be able to do a search on this folder with a piece of data that would be contained in one of the many excel spreadsheets that are in this folder. The computers used by the users are running windows xp and the share is on a windows 2008 r2 server. What do I need to do on these workstations to get the indexing to work correctly so that when they enter the string they are looking for it actually pulls up the list of excel files that this piece of data is included in.

Hello,

Go to Computer Management console (Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.)

There go to the console tree, double-click Services and Applications. and double-click Indexing Service.

Create a new catalog to the mapped drive or path.

I have tried that but I get Catalog name or location is already in use or invalid. The only Catalog currently is the System Catalog.
Check the "Allow indexing service to index this folder" checkbox. Right click on the mapped drive, General tab, Advanced button.

That is already checked. Allow Indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching.

Had to install windows search 4.0. That allowed the network path to be indexed.
